Adapting to High Altitudes

Here are some easy tips on how to adapt to the high altitude, mountain environment:

  • Mountain air is very dry. Saline spray, extra lotion, and lip balm can replace lost moisture. Also, remember that alcoholic and caffeine drinks work against hydration while water or fruit juices hydrate.
  • The Colorado sun is more intense than you might expect, particularly when the ground is snow covered. A hat, sunglasses, and a good sunscreen will help protect you.
  • With thinner air at high altitudes, less oxygen is available, making you winded more quickly. Adjust activities accordingly.
  • Be aware that some more sensitive people can initially react to high altitudes (usually above 8,000 ft.) with sudden headaches or loss of appetite. This condition responds well to increased rest, more breaks, and fresh air. (The elevation of Colorado Springs is 6,035.)
